Recently at the end of the month I was looking at the rent bill for our apartment. There is this new thing called current utility charges which we had tacked onto our new leases. I heard murmurs of dissent and a tiny bit of whining (which might have actually been me!) Maybe it was even the final insult that made some people move out in the past few months. I know nothing, as usual.
However, have I got a good idea to save some money. I mean, if you look at the yearly cost of the utility charges it adds up to almost a thousand bucks in a year's time. I know that one thousand is the new one hundred nowadays but it's still real money.
First of all, there is the gas. That we can probably do nothing about since it is really minuscule. But the sewer is worth talking about. What exactly do we put in the sewer? I know it means that yucky part that we really can't do anything about. I am referring to the waste from the bathroom. Nature handles that. Sometimes though maybe everyone can be a little more careful about what they eat?
But then there is the waste water from the sink and shower. This will help us cut down on the showers, shaves and dish washing. That might also help reduce the monstrous water bill!
Who says we have to shower every day? Do we work in a coal mine? Shower every other day. Maybe if you haven't done anything but play board games for a week....maybe you can shower every three days? Remember back in our grandparent's day they probably only bathed once a week in a small wash tub. They seemed pretty healthy, didn't they?
Another way we can save water is to lighten up the laundry. Okay, I guess it is best if you wash your underwear after one wearing. But surely you can wear your shirt or sweater more than one day or maybe two. As for your pants or skirts who knows how long you can wear them? Maybe three or four times? I recently read an article about how often to wash your jeans. It said you can go a week! (I wish I could find that article so folks would believe me more!)
Then finally there is dish washing. Gosh that dishwasher runs a lot of water unless you put it on one hour. I know you can't really use dishes that are dirty over and over again. But use one glass all day for your beverages. See! It will work if you give it a try. Another good trick is to go out and buy some cheap paper plates. Buy a thousand on sale if you can. Imagine the joy of just dumping the paper plate in the garbage! You don't have to scrape and rinse a real plate. Just dump the whole thing. Of course you must be careful not to add to the trash bill. But keep in mind the water bill is more than the trash bill. Maybe when you go for a drive you can take a trash bag along and dispose of it somewhere away from our beloved Everleigh. Garbage day would be an ideal day for a dump drive!
That is my plan to save a bit on our new utility charges. If we all start on September 1, we can see if it works. Also because it will be September it might be cooler out. That means that we will experience less perspiration and we won't need to change and wash our clothes so often, I also might suggest sleeping in the nude to also cut down on laundry.
That's it! We can save money together in a cooperative method suggested here. It is your decision. There is only one warning. I remember now that my grandparents always smelled faintly of mothballs. Try to avoid that happening to you. I know I am.
I love your wisdom
ReplyDeleteand humor. In California I paid an average of $300 and more a month
to PG&E. (Gas and electric). Water was &100 every month. But it was nice to have the trash and recycling picked up at your doorstep.
But this not the only reason to love it here…the people! I lived, schooled and started my business here and it is good to be back.
